Keep Your Cat Indoors
My neighbor, Mary Anne, was bird watching -- from her backdoor! The three robin fledglings are preparing to fly off and find homes of their own. All the more reason to keep cats inside. If give the chance, Charlotte would turn into an agressive baby bird hunter. It is estimated that cats kill nearly 4 billion (that's billion with a B) birds every year. Saving the Baghdad Zoo -- a true story of hope and heroes
I'm conflicted when it comes to zoos. I do not believe that we should keep animals to be a spectacle. However, with so many animals endangered, I realize that zoos can help certain species surviive. This is definitely a story of survival. Many, many interesting facts are packed into this book. Several heartbreaking stories detailing animal abuse and neglect are told. I held my breath when I read the book. The stories are gripping. In the end, can I say I felt happy that the zoo was rebuilt and is open in Baghdad today? No. Did Major Sumner and others do the right thing? Yes.

- Hi, I'm Debbie. I oversee the League's education program. Most of my days are spent in Washington, D.C. elementary schools talking to students about animals. Sometimes, my dog, Nigel, goes with me. Nigel is a rescue dog. I wrote a book about him. The book, NIGEL, is available through Operation-Outreach USA, www.oousa.org. Because he is thinking about SPRING. Unfortunately, with Spring comes mosquitoes and mosquitoes can cause heartworms. March is a good time to take your dog (or cat) to the veterinarian; ask for a heartworm check. Animals should take heartworm preventative all-year-round. Heartworm is a deadly, but preventable disease.

Troupe 610 Collects Needed Items for WARL
Troupe 610, from Westbrook Elementary School in Bethesda, Maryland packed two trunks full of goodies for the animals. The girls rummaged through their closets, collected from neighbors, and purchased items so that the shelter animals had a nice supply of dog beds, blankets, toys and treats
Asia Shares Her Birthday With the Animals at the League
Asia, and her sister, Maya, introduce Bayou to one of the many toys that they brought to the League. Asia asked her friends to come to her house for her 10-year-old birthday celebration. She asked that they bring gifts for the animals at the League rather than presents for her. This is not the first time that the family has helped homeless animals. Aside from adopting 2 cats and 2 dogs, they practically set up their own animal welfare organization while living in Egypt. They took in numerous cats and paid to have them spayed or neutered.
Silver Spring Avenue Crew Helps the Animals at the League
Pictured with WARL alum, Juneau, are Leo, Harry, Audrey, Bella, Fiona, Emma, Raphael, Elise -- the Silver Spring Avenue Crew. The team held a toy sale and lemonade stand that netted $171.00 for the animals! Thank you for caring and supporting the League.
Jonah's Bar Mitzvah Project Yields a Large Food Donation for League's Rescuer's Food Bank
When Jonah asked his Bar Mitzvah guests to consider bringing cat or dog food to his bar mitzvah to help people in need feed their companion animals, his guests happily did just that. Jonah and his mom dropped off an entire SUV full of food. Jonah visited with a shelter puppy after the vehicle was unloaded. Takoma Park 4-H Club -- Donations Galore!
The Takoma Park 4-H Club dropped by on Sunday, March 11th with bundles of donations -- they designed and created cat comforters and toys, collected towels for the animals, and brought food, treats and cash -- all to help the animals. Many thanks!
Brent Elementary School's Kids Care Service Club
Created a Cool Advertising Campaign, featuring Shakespeare -- an incredible goodwill ambassador -- to Benefit Animals at the League. Bags and bags and bags of much needed blankets, towels and quilts were collected at the school and delivered to the League
Brent students created artwork and essays that expressed the importance of proper animal care and the the League's important mission.
Gourmet Dog Treats Come to the League in Brightly Colored Bags
Students participating in the Wonders afterschool program, at Chevy Chase Elementary School, in Maryland, made treats for the dogs at WARL and packaged them in adorable, uniquely decorated bags. Ten bags in all were delivered to the shelter during spring break.
Grace Episcopal Day School Girl Scouts Create Toys for Shelter Cats
The girls took on a project to help shelter animals --they organized a blanket and towel drive & made cat toys out of baby socks and catnip. When they dropped by the League to deliver their donations, they spent time interacting with the animals. Thanks Troop 5602.
