The Washington Animal Rescue League was established in 1914. Several years later the League built D.C.'s first animal shelter. In 2006 the League completed a renovation that features a state-of-the-art cat and dog adoption center and a full-service medical center. Designed entirely from the animals' point of view, the facility supports the physical, mental, and social well-being of its resident animals. Too Sad for Words

I just opened yahoo on my computer and read this headline, AP Exclusive: New taste for Thai elephant meat, The article at, http://news.yahoo.com/ap-exclusive-taste-thai-elephant-meat-035353902.html., is heartbreaking.

4H Apple Cinnamon Drops

Homemade Dog Treats

Ingredients:

1 large apple

¼ cup honey

½ cup water

½ tsp. cinnamon

1 cup oatmeal

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour

1/8 cup whole wheat

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

2. Core, slice & mince the apple. In a large bowl, combine the minced apple bits, honey, water, cinnamon, and oatmeal. Gradually blend in the wheat flour, enough to form stiff dough.

3. In a small bowl, add 1/8 cup wheat flour. Spoon the dough by rounded teaspoon onto an ungreased baking sheet, spacing about 2 inches (5cm) apart. Using the bottom of a glad dipped in the wheat four (to prevent sticking), flatten each spoonful of dough into a circle.

4. Adjust the size of the drops – different size treats for different size dogs.

5. Bake for 30 minutes

6. Remove from the oven and flip each treat to brown evenly on both sides.

7. Reduce the oven temperature to 325°F (180°). Return to the oven and bake for 30 minutes.

8. Let the biscuits cool completely, preferably overnight.

Makes about 3 dozen crunching dog cookies, depending on the size.

Saving the Baghdad Zoo -- a true story of hope and heroes

I'm conflicted when it comes to zoos. I do not believe that we should keep animals to be a spectacle. However, with so many animals endangered, I realize that zoos can help certain species surviive. This is definitely a story of survival. Many, many interesting facts are packed into this book. Several heartbreaking stories detailing animal abuse and neglect are told. I held my breath when I read the book. The stories are gripping. In the end, can I say I felt happy that the zoo was rebuilt and is open in Baghdad today? No. Did Major Sumner and others do the right thing? Yes.

Do Advertising Dollars Buy Favorable Media?

You decide. The front page of the March 17th edition of the Washington Post features a large photo of circus elephants on parade. That prime space typically highlights record breaking news. But, on this morning, there are the elephants, dressed in Ringling Brothers' head bands advertising "The Greatest Show on Earth". The two enormous wild animals are being pulled down the street by Ringling employees, passing in front of the Capitol. No mention of animal cruelty. Basically, it's a free front page advertisement -- maybe a thank you for all of the dollars Ringling Brothers spends on promoting their wild animal acts.

It Pays to Care

When 10-year-old Abby decided to donate to the Washington Animal Rescue League, she decided to increase her contribution by asking family and friends to help her raise money to help the animals at the League. She wrote, "I collected by walking around school, asking if people wanted to donate money to cats and dogs. I love cats and dogs and have two cats and a dog. I was so excited to find that lots of people wanted to donate. This donation is for anything -- to help feed. buy things, or whatever you need for them. All of your animals are adorable and I hope you love them ALL. Thank you so much!" THANK YOU Abby and friends for donating and caring!!

Holiday Cheer!

Thanks to middle school students, Aaron, Alana, Claire, Julia, and Max -- and their parents -- the Washington Animal Rescue League's staff and volunteers were treated to a banquet of delicious Christmas morning treats including breakfast muffins and an assortment of cookies. AND, when it was discovered that the shelter was low on stuffed kongs, the visitors pitched-in working expediently leaving two heavy bags of kongs, stuffed with peanut butter and biscuits, for the dogs to enjoy later in the day.
