Saving the Baghdad Zoo -- a true story of hope and heroes
I'm conflicted when it comes to zoos. I do not believe that we should keep animals to be a spectacle. However, with so many animals endangered, I realize that zoos can help certain species surviive. This is definitely a story of survival. Many, many interesting facts are packed into this book. Several heartbreaking stories detailing animal abuse and neglect are told. I held my breath when I read the book. The stories are gripping. In the end, can I say I felt happy that the zoo was rebuilt and is open in Baghdad today? No. Did Major Sumner and others do the right thing? Yes.

- Hi, I'm Debbie. I oversee the League's education program. Most of my days are spent in Washington, D.C. elementary schools talking to students about animals. Sometimes, my dog, Nigel, goes with me. Because he is thinking about SPRING. Unfortunately, with Spring comes mosquitoes and mosquitoes can cause heartworms. March is a good time to take your dog (or cat) to the veterinarian; ask for a heartworm check. Animals should take heartworm preventative all-year-round. Heartworm is a deadly, but preventable disease.

Brent Elementary School's Kids Care Service Club
Created a Cool Advertising Campaign, featuring Shakespeare -- an incredible goodwill ambassador -- to Benefit Animals at the League. Bags and bags and bags of much needed blankets, towels and quilts were collected at the school and delivered to the League
Brent students created artwork and essays that expressed the importance of proper animal care and the the League's important mission.
Gourmet Dog Treats Come to the League in Brightly Colored Bags
Students participating in the Wonders afterschool program, at Chevy Chase Elementary School, in Maryland, made treats for the dogs at WARL and packaged them in adorable, uniquely decorated bags. Ten bags in all were delivered to the shelter during spring break.
Grace Episcopal Day School Girl Scouts Create Toys for Shelter Cats
The girls took on a project to help shelter animals --they organized a blanket and towel drive & made cat toys out of baby socks and catnip. When they dropped by the League to deliever their donations, they spent time interacting with the animals. Thanks Troop 5602.
